Brad is 82 years old. He is independent and lives with his wife who is 80. He schedules a hip replacement surgery. They discuss what to expect for his recovery and his post-surgery care needs with his family and his Dr. The day of the surgery comes, everything goes well, everyone is relieved. He even stands up. The surgery was a success.
Later that night, Brad has a stroke. A known complication of surgery.
Even though he was in the hospital when it happens, he suffers some loss of vision, paralysis on the left side of his body and some speech problems. His care needs have changed dramatically.
The one week of in-patient rehab that they had planned on is not nearly enough to meet his needs. Even with intensive therapy and the best outcomes, Brad may not completely recover all of his capabilities. What is Brad to do now? Where is he going to find the care that he needs?
