“Cleaning your cell phone is a far more effective preventative measure than something like wearing a face mask,” says Debra Goff, Pharm.D., a founding member of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, and recent appointee to the World Health Organization antimicrobial stewardship program in low- and middle-income countries.

How to Clean AND Disinfect your cell phone

Keep in mind that some disinfectants like diluted household bleach don’t play well with electronics. According to Apple, many cleaning products and abrasive materials will diminish the fingerprint-resistant coating that keeps your phone from becoming a grimy mess whenever you scroll. Here’s what to do instead:

DO’s

1. Power down first

2. Opt for Microfiber Cloths

These specially designed cloths have more fibers than other types of cloth, and as a result, can pick up more microscopic particles, including bacteria and viruses. That doesn’t mean it kills them—just lifts them off surfaces without the use of water. You need to disinfect the cloth before using it again.

The “sanitize” cycle of the dishwasher works well, hang dry or
Throw it in the washing machine with hot water

3. Rubbing alcohol

Use a disinfecting solution of 60% water and 40% rubbing alcohol. Use a small corner of a cloth to gently clean the phone. Immediately use a dry portion of the cloth right afterward.

4. Disinfecting Wipes

You may use disinfecting wipes. Be careful only use over the screen.

5. Dispose of Used Clothes Properly

Once you’ve used a cloth, that’s where the viruses live now! So, put the dirty cloth’s into a sealed plastic bag until it can get cleaned.

6. Wash Your Hands after Cleaning your Phone

DON’Ts

Avoid Abrasive Products that may affect the Phone Screen’s Coating like:

• Window Cleaner
• Vinegar
• Hydrogen Peroxide

Don’t Expose Your Phone to Places that are especially Germy

• Public Restrooms
• Anyplace that gets a fine spray of toilet water, sneezes or coughs
